How to Calculate Equipment Availability
Availability is only meaningful after the clock and downtime categories are defined. The same asset can have different valid availability values for different decision contexts.
Choose the availability boundary
Inherent availability focuses on intrinsic reliability and active corrective repair: MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR). Operational availability adds logistics and administrative delay. Production availability may additionally use schedule, demand, and planned-outage rules.
None is automatically “the correct” value. The decision determines the boundary: design trade-offs, support-system improvement, or production commitment each need a different view.
Build a defensible time model
Define operating time, active repair, waiting for parts, waiting for personnel, access delay, planned maintenance, and no-demand time before aggregating work orders. Ensure every hour is categorized once and only once.
Interpret the gap
A large gap between inherent and operational availability is a signal to investigate spares, planning, permits, staffing, and supply chain—not necessarily redesign the asset. A low inherent value calls for reliability and maintainability work.
Use the result in an operating review
Trend availability by critical asset, loss category, and maintenance strategy. Pair it with failure count, downtime duration, backlog, and production effect to avoid a dashboard that conceals recurring high-consequence events.
