OEE Loss Categories Explained
Overall equipment effectiveness is useful when its three components lead to visible, well-owned loss categories rather than a single score.
Availability losses
Availability compares runtime with planned production time. Breakdowns, setup, and other stops must be consistently classified. Maintenance should distinguish recurring equipment failures from operational waiting or scheduling losses.
Performance losses
Performance compares actual production speed with ideal cycle time. Minor stops, speed loss, unstable process conditions, and starved or blocked equipment can all reduce it. An unrealistic ideal cycle time makes performance meaningless.
Quality losses
Quality compares good units with total produced units. Scrap, rework, startup reject, and downstream detection rules should be agreed before reviewing the metric.
Move from OEE to action
Use a Pareto of time and output loss beneath each component. A stable OEE trend can still hide a costly critical outage, so pair it with reliability and downtime economics.
