Reliability Block Diagrams Explained

A reliability block diagram models paths that must work for a defined mission. It is a logic model, not a piping diagram or an equipment layout.

Define success before drawing blocks

State the mission, duration, demand mode, performance threshold, and required output. A pump may be successful when one of two trains delivers minimum flow, while a control loop may require every series element.

Series and parallel logic

Series blocks represent all elements required for success; their reliability multiplies when inputs are independent. Parallel blocks represent alternative paths where at least one works. K-out-of-N logic represents systems that need several of many identical channels.

Handle dependencies explicitly

Common power, shared suction, a common operator, a single maintenance error, or a common environment can defeat apparent redundancy. Show those shared causes separately or use a more suitable model instead of multiplying independent probabilities.

Use diagrams as a review tool

Review an RBD with operations, controls, maintenance, and design. The value often comes from exposing missing isolation, single points of failure, or unclear success criteria before the probability calculation begins.
