What this calculator does

MTBF divides total operating time by the number of failures. It describes the observed average operating interval between failure events for repairable equipment, not the duration before the first failure of a disposable item.

When to use it

Use MTBF to trend a consistent asset class, compare an unchanged maintenance strategy, or supply a first-pass input to availability analysis. Include operating exposure only, and use the same failure definition throughout the comparison.

Inputs and formula

Total operating time is the accumulated in-service time; failures are the qualifying events within that exposure. MTBF = total operating time ÷ number of failures

Worked example and interpretation

1,000 operating hours and 10 qualifying failures produce an MTBF of 100 hours. This does not mean a failure will occur exactly every 100 hours. It is an average over the population and observation window.

Practical notes and limitations

Exclude standby time unless it is part of the stated exposure. Small failure counts, changing operating severity, unreported minor failures, and mixed asset configurations can make a single MTBF misleading. Pair it with MTTR when uptime is the decision.
