MTBF vs MTTF vs MTTR
Three familiar abbreviations answer different questions: how often repairable equipment fails, how long non-repairable items last, and how long restoration takes.
Start with the asset model
MTBF applies to repairable equipment: failure, restoration, then another operating interval. MTTF applies to a population that is not restored after failure, such as lamps, seals in a test population, or one-shot assemblies. MTTR measures active repair duration, not failure frequency.
Confusion begins when an organization uses “MTBF” as a general quality label. A high MTBF says nothing about repair duration; a low MTTR does not offset severe consequence or repeated breakdowns.
Use consistent exposure and event rules
For MTBF, divide qualifying operating exposure by qualifying failures. For MTTF, divide population operating exposure by failed units. MTTR divides active hands-on restoration time by completed repairs. The failure definition, asset population, and time basis must remain consistent across periods.
Downtime waiting for access, parts, approvals, or transportation should normally be reported separately. Folding it into MTTR may be useful for a local service metric, but it removes the distinction between maintainability and support delay.
How the metrics connect to availability
A simplified inherent availability model uses MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR). It is a useful design or screening relationship, but it omits many operational delays. Operational availability includes those support delays and is therefore often closer to what production experiences.
Practical reporting pattern
Report the numerator, denominator, time window, inclusion rules, and confidence caveat beside each metric. Segment by asset class or failure mode before turning a fleet average into an action. A high-level trend should lead to failure-mode review, not replace it.
